No deadline is published and the next cycle is unannounced. CFC's own applications page lists the lab with an empty deadline field, and the programme page carries no application link. There is no pattern to extrapolate from: this has run exactly once. Applications for the inaugural cycle opened in June 2025, the cohort was announced on 19 January 2026, and the lab ran 19 January to 5 June 2026 with Jezabel Bamberg, Sandi Rankaduwa, Isabella Shibuta and Yemie Sonuga. Note that the announced schedule already moved once: launch materials said the lab would run October 2025 to March 2026, and it did not. Treat any forward-looking date here with suspicion.

TWO HARD GATES, AND THE SECOND IS UNUSUAL. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, and must self-identify as a Black, Indigenous and/or racialized writer or creator. On top of that sits a credit gate that excludes most working writers: you must have professional comedy writing experience in any form, including sketch, standup, shorts, features, podcasts or theatre, AND you must have been in at least one broadcaster or streamer supported series development room. That second requirement is absolute, and it is what separates this from every other entry-level lab we carry. Attendance is full-time and in person, with standard hours of 10:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday and additional evening and weekend work expected. No pre-existing Toronto residency rule is published, and relocation from outside Ontario is contemplated. Application fee, required materials and feedback policy are not published anywhere we could reach.
Prizes
No cash prize. Tuition of 10,000 Canadian dollars is covered in full by scholarship for every incoming resident, funded by CFC donors including longstanding endowment donors, so the participant never pays it. Unlike CFC's Film Program, the bursary here is stated unconditionally: participants receive a monthly bursary of 750 Canadian dollars, prorated for the half month, plus a fixed one-time relocation bursary of 1,500 dollars for those relocating from outside Ontario. These are bursaries rather than wages and no employment relationship is published. The substantive value is the produced proof of concept or television teaser made from your own pilot, which CFC pays for. RIGHTS, AND THIS IS THE ONE TO ASK ABOUT: participants must sign a Rights Agreement covering their participation in the story room component. Writers retain IP in original projects they bring in, but CFC retains ownership of the completed teaser made from your pilot, because the insurance, agreements and ongoing liabilities sit with CFC. The Rights Agreement text itself is not published, so its actual scope over story room material is unknown. No option, first refusal or exclusivity in favour of Bell Media or Blink49 appears anywhere, but with a broadcaster partner attached this is worth asking CFC directly before you accept a place.
Judging
Selectors are not published. Nelu Handa was named as showrunner and lead mentor for the 2026 cohort, with guest professionals engaged on short-term contracts. Feedback policy is not published. Note that CFC blocks automated fetching and serves its programme documents as forced downloads, so several details here come from the overview document rather than the web page, and the application fee, materials list and feedback policy appear in neither.
The PreList verdict
A genuinely good deal for the four writers who get in. Tuition is fully scholarshipped, the monthly bursary of 750 dollars is stated without conditions unlike CFC's Film Program, relocation help is published, and you come out with a professionally produced teaser of your own pilot plus five and a half months in a real story room led by a working showrunner. For a Canadian comedy writer that is close to the best training available domestically.
The gate is what defines it. Alongside the identity requirement, which is clearly stated, sits a credit requirement that quietly excludes most applicants: you must have already been in at least one broadcaster or streamer supported series development room. That is not a preference, it is a bar, and it makes this a mid-career lab wearing an emerging-writer label. If you have never been in a commissioned room, this is not your entry point.
Two cautions. The first is the Rights Agreement. CFC publishes that one exists and that it covers the story room component, but not what it says, and there is a broadcaster partner attached. Ask before you sign. The second is planning: this has run once, no next cycle is announced, the deadline field on CFC's own applications page is empty, and the inaugural schedule shifted by three months after it was announced. Do not build a year around it. Worth noting too that CFC's longer-running Prime Time TV Program has not run a cohort since 2022/23 and its page now 404s; this looks like its successor, though CFC calls it building off that model rather than replacing it.

Who can actually apply?

CFC publishes that participants must sign one covering the story room component, but not what it contains. Writers keep IP in projects they bring in, and CFC owns the produced teaser. With Bell Media attached as presenting partner, ask CFC for the agreement text before accepting a place.
When is the next cycle?
Unannounced. It has run once, in early 2026, and CFC's applications page lists it with an empty deadline field. The inaugural schedule also moved by three months after it was first announced, so treat any expected date with caution.

CFC Norman Jewison Film Program: Writers' Lab

The 2026 cycle opened in January and closed on 26 February 2026 at 3:00pm EST, with a 100 Canadian dollar application fee plus HST payable via Stripe; the HST-inclusive total is not published. The residency itself runs from 13 July to early December 2026. The 2027 window is unannounced, but this is the most reliably annual programme of its kind in Canada: three consecutive cycles are evidenced with 19 participants each, running 15 July to 13 December 2024, 14 July to 12 December 2025, and from 13 July 2026, with five writers in the Writers' Lab every year. On that record a call opening in January with a late-February deadline is a reasonable expectation, though CFC has not published one.

Channel 4 New Writers Scheme

The last published cycle opened on 28 May 2025 and closed at 18:00 on 25 June 2025, and no window for the next cycle has been published anywhere. Be careful projecting from that: the window moved by roughly three and a half months between cycles, from 6 February to 1 March in 2024 to late May and June in 2025, and the programme year moved with it. Only two cycles are evidenced and they disagree, so there is no stable pattern. The careers page has been unchanged since at least January 2026 and still fronts the closed 2025/26 cycle, so watch Channel 4's talent schemes index rather than this page.

The 2026 round closed at 11:59pm on Sunday 3 May 2026 and the competition returns in early 2027, with no date yet published. The recent pattern is consistent: across 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 the deadline has fallen on the last Sunday of April or the first Sunday of May at 11:59pm, with finalists in June and showcases in June and July. The fee rose from 20 to the current level between 2024 and 2025 and has held since. One caveat on calling it annual: the organisers' own previous-years list skips 2019, 2021 and 2022, and the 2020 finalists were never staged in a theatre because of the pandemic, so it has run annually since 2023 but has missed years before.
Twenty pounds, open to anyone including produced writers, and your sitcom performed by professional actors.

Virginia Screenwriting Competition

The 2026 round opened on 6 April and closed on 25 May 2026 at 11:59pm Eastern, with winners announced at the Virginia Film Festival in October. This has one of the most predictable calendars we have found: across four consecutive cycles the closing date has fallen on US Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, every single year, with entries opening in early April in three of those four. No extensions are ever granted. One small note for verification: only the 2026 cycle published a timezone; earlier years stated 11:59pm with no zone.
