Writers must be 18 or over; entries accepted from all countries. In the five years before the final deadline entrants must not have earned more than $25,000 in total for motion picture and TV writing services or script sales. Scripts must be original, in English, and unproduced, unoptioned and unsold at submission. Features 85 to 125 pages; drama pilots 45 to 65 pages; single-camera comedies 22 to 45 pages; multi-camera 52 to 58 pages.

Prizes

Two separate fellowships. The Feature Fellowship carries a US$10,000 cash award; the TV Fellowship, fed by the contest currently open, pays US$3,000. Both include free retreat tuition and housing plus a 12-month mentorship with two hand-picked industry professionals, and supplemental Script Pipeline mentorship. Second prize US$1,500, third US$1,000. Non-fellow invitees (finalists, semifinalists and quarterfinalists as space allows) attend the retreat at their own cost, which was US$2,800 per individual and US$4,600 per team in 2025.

Judging

Anonymous judging moves entries through quarterfinalist, semifinalist and finalist rounds announced over roughly three months after the final deadline, with the Fellow named last; finalists submit a letter and video. No notes are given on submissions. The Feature Retreat runs 2 to 6 October 2026 in Idyllwild; the TV Retreat runs 23 to 27 April 2027.

The PreList verdict

CineStory's contests feed a five-day mentorship retreat in Idyllwild, California, where winners, finalists and semifinalists work through intensive one-to-one and group sessions with industry mentors. The contact time per writer is unusually high for the money, and the fellowship on top carries a twelve-month mentorship with two hand-picked professionals rather than a single meeting.

The honest part: the headline prize is not the one currently open. The US$10,000 cash award belongs to the Feature Fellowship; the TV Fellowship, which is the contest accepting entries, pays US$3,000. Everyone below fellow level attends at their own cost, which was US$2,800 per individual and US$4,600 per team in 2025, so an invitation is an invoice unless you actually win. There is also a hard income cap: no more than US$25,000 earned from screen writing in the five years before the final deadline.

Enter the TV contest if you write pilots, can travel to California, and treat the retreat as paid development with a chance of a fellowship rather than as a prize. Five deadlines run from 10 August 2026 at US$50 up to 15 December 2026 at US$95, so entering at the earlybird saves US$45 on exactly the same submission.

Filmmatic Comedy Screenplay Awards

Contest · 2026

Closed for this cycle

The 2026 season closed on 30 June 2026 with accolades announced by 15 August, and no 2027 dates have been published. One caution if you go looking: filmmatic.com's own page currently shows a deadline ladder headed 2025 which is actually the 2023 season's dates, so use the FilmFreeway listing, which is the reliable source. We could only evidence two seasons, and every 2026 milestone fell exactly one month earlier than its 2023 counterpart, so treat the shape loosely rather than as a fixed calendar: entries open around March, the final deadline falls around the end of June, and results land in mid-August.

Comedy-genre screenplay awards. $1,000 cash plus industry consultations and press exposure for the overall winner.

Dublin International Film Festival ESB Short Film Award

Grant · 2027

Closed for this cycle

The call opened on 19 May 2026 and closed at 17:30 on 31 July 2026, extended from an original date of 21 July. IMPORTANT: this is a one-off anniversary award, not an annual competition. It was launched to mark ESB's centenary and the festival's 25th anniversary, there is no prior cycle of any kind, and an archive search returns no earlier captures of the page. Do not expect a next window: if it recurs at all, that will be new information. Two errors on their own pages are worth knowing: the website gives the premiere as February 2026 while the guidelines correctly say February 2027, and the award appears under three different official names across the page, the guidelines PDF and the required email subject line.

Eighteen thousand euro to make your short, and a premiere at DIFF. A one-off anniversary award, not an annual.

European Short Pitch

Lab · 2026

Closed for this cycle

IMPORTANT: the next edition is on hold. In July 2026 European Short Pitch announced that the call for its 2027 edition was suspended after Creative Europe MEDIA funding did not come through, saying it was facing a genuinely uncertain moment and exploring smaller, more focused activities for 2027 instead. The most recently completed cycle was the nineteenth edition: applications closed on 12 September 2025, extended to 19 September, with selection announced in mid-December, the development workshop in mid-January 2026 and the forum in early June 2026. Until 2027 the annual rhythm had been strikingly stable, with a September deadline, December selection, January workshop and June forum, which makes this pause a genuine break rather than drift.

A six-month short film development programme and co-production forum. The 2027 edition is on hold.

Finalists were notified on 4 September; the Awards Evening is at Komedia in Bath on 19 October 2026, during the festival (16 to 25 October).
