Three applicant types are accepted: producers based in Scotland, producers based outside Scotland where the writing or directing talent is Scotland-based, and individual screenwriters based in Scotland. The lone-writer route sets a high bar: at least one full-length feature screenplay produced, where the completed film was theatrically distributed, received critical acclaim or screened at recognised international festivals. The fund states it strongly encourages applications from writer, director and producer teams with the producer applying, and would not normally fund projects where the producer is also the sole writer. Projects where all key creative talent is based outside Scotland are excluded even if the story is Scottish. Projects must be capable of qualifying as a British film via the Cultural Test, a co-production treaty or the European Convention. First-time feature filmmakers are directed to Talent Builder instead. The BFI Diversity Standards are part of the eligibility criteria. Applications are accepted in English, Gaelic or Scots.
Prizes
Awards in the range of 3,000 to 50,000 pounds, paid against an agreed schedule and cash-flow normally set against milestones. IMPORTANT: this funding is repayable on the first day of principal photography if the project goes into production. You are also required to assign a share of all rights in the project, including copyright, to Creative Scotland, reassigned to you on repayment, and to give Creative Scotland a development credit. Independent Scotland-based producers who repay have the money ring-fenced in a locked box to draw down on future projects or staff training; the guidance writes that benefit around producers, so whether a sole screenwriter gets a locked box is genuinely unresolved in the document.
Judging
Complete and eligible applications are assessed by Screen Scotland officers against the published criteria. Following officer recommendations, decisions on awards up to 100,000 pounds are taken by the Screen Team, chaired by the Director of Screen. Feedback is offered to unsuccessful applicants so they can strengthen and resubmit, though a repeat application for the same project is only accepted if the original reasons for refusal have been addressed.
The PreList verdict
This is Screen Scotland's main development fund, and the only genuinely rolling, no-deadline, no-fee development money for screenwriters we have found anywhere. Between 3,000 and 50,000 pounds against a real itemised budget: optioning rights, writing, script editing, research, concept art, taster reels, travel, casting, even the legal costs on your options and writers' agreements. Decisions come inside six weeks, individual screenwriters are explicitly eligible, and unsuccessful applicants get feedback and can reapply once they have addressed it. That combination is rare enough to be worth saying twice.
The honest part: it is repayable. Not a commercial loan, but if your film reaches its first day of principal photography you repay the development funding then, and in the meantime you assign a share of the rights including copyright to Creative Scotland, reassigned to you when you repay. There is a locked box letting Scotland-based producers redraw what they repay on future projects, but the guidance writes that benefit around producers and it is genuinely unclear whether a sole screenwriter gets one. The entry bar is also far higher than First Draft: the lone-writer route wants a produced feature that was theatrically distributed, critically acclaimed or festival-screened, and the fund says plainly it would not normally fund a project where the producer is also the sole writer.
Apply if you have a distributed feature behind you and a specific development budget you can itemise, ideally with a producer leading the application. If you are earlier than that, First Draft is your door and Screen Scotland says so itself, pointing first-time feature filmmakers at Talent Builder. There is no deadline to plan around: applications are accepted all year and you should hear within six weeks.

DORMANT: the last evidenced cycle is 2025 and no 2026 or 2027 window has been announced. The live page says applications are currently closed and this year's application period has ended, while every date on it remains a 2025 date, the governing terms are still headed 2025, and the fellows roster runs 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 then stops. On the established pattern of a March open, an April close and August-to-November sessions, a 2026 cohort would be starting sessions about now; neither a window nor a cohort has appeared. There is no hiatus or discontinuation notice anywhere, and the operator actively invites people to subscribe for an update on when the next application opens, so this is a programme in limbo rather than a dead one. Worth re-checking each March. FOR THE RECORD, THE 2025 DEADLINE WAS PUBLISHED TWO DIFFERENT WAYS: the programme page and FAQ said 28 April 2025 at 12PM EST, while the governing terms and conditions said the entry period ended at 12:00pm EST on 14 April 2025. Two weeks apart in the operator's own documents, with the legally governing one being the earlier. We have therefore stored no deadline at all rather than pick one. Context, not causation: Sesame Workshop announced major layoffs in March 2025, reported at around 20 per cent of staff; no source connects those cuts to this fellowship, and the 2025 cycle ran to completion afterwards.

Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting

The 2026-27 cycle is under way and both public entry windows have already closed, each filling on capacity ahead of its published deadline. The Black List portal opened 8 June 2026 and shut around 19 June on its 2,500 cap, well before the 6 July date the Academy had published; the Writers Guild Foundation portal opened 22 June and filled its 2,000 places before its 20 July deadline. Fellows are awarded in spring 2027. There is no stable annual pattern to plan around: under the old open-entry model the contest opened in January or February with a March to May ladder, while the two cycles under the partner model opened in mid-May 2025 and early June 2026. The practical advice is to watch for the Academy's partner announcement press release, which came on 8 June for this cycle, and enter the same week. Waiting for the published deadline is how people miss it.

AFF Script Competition: Austin Film Festival

The 2026 competitions closed early: Austin states that submission volume reached capacity in all categories ahead of the published late deadline of 27 May, so the effective close fell somewhere between 1 and 27 May and no exact date was published. Winners are announced on 31 October 2026, with reader comments sent by mid-November. The 2027 competitions open in December 2026, which Austin has published. The annual shape is reliable across four evidenced cycles: entries open in the first half of December (7 December 2022, early December 2023, 9 December 2024 and 8 December 2025), early bird lands in late March, regular in mid-to-late April, and the late deadline in the last days of May. All deadlines close at 11:59pm Central. Winners are announced at the Awards Luncheon during the festival in late October or early November. Two changes make the late deadline less dependable than it looks. The capacity cap is new for 2026, pre-announced and then triggered for the first time, and the Extended tier that existed in 2023, 2024 and 2025 was abolished. Deadlines have also tightened year on year, from a late deadline extended to 31 May in both 2023 and 2024, to a firm 28 May in 2025 and 27 May in 2026. Enter early: the published date is now a ceiling rather than a promise.
