One voice carries a quarter of the words.
However large the cast, produced dialogue concentrates: the single biggest part in the median feature speaks 27.5% of every word of dialogue, and in a quarter of the cohort it is over 35.4%. The wide cast list and the dominant voice are not in tension; they are how produced scripts are built.

The bands overlap heavily, which is itself the finding: genre sets the flavour of speech far more than the amount of it. Even action, the most visual genre in the cohort, gives dialogue nearly equal space on the page.
About these figures
Every number is counted deterministically from the screenplay text of 268 professionally produced features, released 2000-2026. Figures are medians with the middle 50% stated; genre cells below n=20 are counted but not described. Benchmarks describe the cohort, not rules: the full caveats live in the methodology. These figures come from The Anatomy of a Produced Screenplay, where they sit in context.
