Open to applicants living anywhere in the United States or internationally, and stories may be set anywhere in the world; projects and filmmakers do not have to be rooted in the Bay Area. Applicants must be 18 or over and not employees or board members of SFFILM or the Kenneth Rainin Foundation. The primary applicant must be in a key creative role as screenwriter, director or producer, so a writer may apply alone at the screenwriting stage with no prior credits required; note the development track is aimed at producers. The film must be a feature-length fiction film, not a short, documentary or work for hire, and must feature plot, character, theme or setting exploring social justice issues such as human and civil rights, anti-discrimination, disability, gender or sexual identity, with strong and recognisable social value. Project budgets must be 3,000,000 US dollars or under including all phases, though the FAQ words this as below 3 million, so the two differ at exactly that figure. Apply for the phase you expect to be in six months after the final deadline. Reapplication is unlimited with a statement of significant progress.

Prizes

Up to 25,000 US dollars, and note that is a ceiling rather than a fixed sum: applicants request an amount up to that figure. Between 15 and 20 projects are funded a year across the screenwriting, development and post-production tracks combined; the screenwriting-only count is not published. At the screenwriting stage the money is awarded to the writer or writer-director and may be used for cost of living and childcare while working on the project, as well as research trips, consultants and table reads. It also carries a mandatory four-week residency at FilmHouse in San Francisco, which is NOT funded: SFFILM states plainly that no additional stipend for travel or accommodation is provided and that filmmakers are welcome to apply the grant toward the cost of travel. For anyone outside the Bay Area, four weeks of San Francisco travel and accommodation comes straight out of the award. ON REPAYMENT, AN HONEST GAP: no recoupment, repayment or profit-participation language appears on SFFILM's page or the funder's, but the grantee requirements PDF that would govern it returns a 404, so we record the terms as unverified rather than confirmed absent.

Judging

Assessed by an unnamed review panel and committee, with roughly 25 finalists shortlisted. The four-week FilmHouse residency is mandatory at the screenwriting stage, need not be contiguous, and is an open workspace rather than accommodation; SFFILM encourages fulfilling it during the San Francisco International Film Festival in April. Post-production applicants are exempt. Note two staleness markers on the live page: notification and announcement milestones are dated 2025 on a 2026 cycle, and applicants are told to select a 2025 option from a dropdown. SFFILM's own pages also disagree on whether FilmHouse is in SOMA or the Presidio.
