How to approach

For screen, arrive with a name. Their film and television guidance is that unsolicited material is not accepted and that pitches, outlines and screenplays are deleted without being read, while a writer referred by a producer, development executive or course tutor may email the agent directly with a CV and the details of the referral.

There is a second route worth knowing about if it applies to you. Their playwrights guidance is genuinely open: one example of your work with a covering letter and CV to their submissions address, though they will not consider synopses or incomplete scripts. Writers who work across stage and screen sometimes arrive through the stage door, and that is not a trick, it is simply a different department with a different policy.

The PreList verdict

Who this is for: referred screen writers, and separately, playwrights, who have a real open route here.

Who should skip it: unrepresented screen writers with no referral, at least through the film and television door. Sending anyway means the material is deleted unread.

The split between departments is the useful thing on this page. A writer with a produced play and a screenplay has a legitimate approach available that a writer with only the screenplay does not, and knowing which policy applies to you is worth more than a better covering letter.
